Assembling themes emerging from confrontations between humanity, ecology, technology and economy, TECHNO comprises an international group show that will occupy the entire Museion building, a public program, a day rave and the TECHNO Reader — an anthology of commissioned critical texts on techno and globalisation.

Contributing artists: Riccardo Benassi, Paul Chan, Nicolò Degiorgis, Karin Ferrari, Massimo Grimaldi, CC Hennix, Tishan Hsu, Mire Lee, Ghislaine Leung, Isabel Lewis, Piero Martinello in collaboration with Franco Ruaro, Sandra Mujinga, Nkisi aka Melika Ngombe Kolongo, Emeka Ogboh, Yuri Pattison, Daniel Pflumm, James Richards and Steve Reinke, James Richards, Jacolby Satterwhite, Leander Schwazer, Sung Tieu, Jan Vorisek among many others.

TECHNO is curated by Bart van der Heide, Director of Museion, in collaboration with an international research team including Francesco Tenaglia, art critic and curator, Florian Fischer, stage director and author and Frida Carazzato, curatorial assistant at Museion.

The TECHNO Reader, includes texts by Caroline Busta & Lil Internet, Matthew Collin, Anna Greenspan, Bart van der Heide and Matthew Herbert, and will be published by Hatje Cantz Verlag. The publication will be available at the exhibition opening.

“When it comes to subculture, commitment is key. There was no such thing as a part-time Punk. Yet, in the case of techno subculture, one can enter and leave at any moment. In a way, the techno experience has flawlessly adapted to the demands of the freelance workforce of a post-industrial era.” Bart van der Heide

Das MALL RETREAT besteht aus einer Reihe experimenteller, künstlerischer und theoretischer Beiträge und Workshops in und um das Kaufhaus SILLPARK in Innsbruck. ANMELDUNG

THE NEW HOLY is a plea for the interweaving of nature and technoculture: the technoid and consumer-oriented present day enters into a liaison with phantasms and metaphysical longings that operate outside the prevailing world view.

Since 21.6. the hanging sculpture Animadidas is presented in the atrium of the shopping mall SILLPARK. A totem-like object made of fragments from techno-animism and consumer materialism.

The next 10 days I’ll spend in the forest building an installation on these coordinates: 47°17’47.8″ N 11°26’12.7″ E. It’s about 200 m from a place called Seven Paths (I don’t make this up, it’s true). Seven Paths is a big crossing in the middle of the forest and there’s a wayside cross on a tree. These types of wayside crosses are called Marterle and there are quite a lot of them along the hiking trails in Tyrol. By the way, one of the things Tyrol is called, is the Holy Land. Also, the Malleus Maleficarum, the Hammer of Witches, has its tragic origins here (apparently Heinrich Kramer institutionalised his theories and methods in this book in an act of revenge after the Bishop of Innsbruck basically told him to fuck off and leave the poor women Kramer was obsessed about alone). However one time I was walking unusually early through the woods. The morning fog was still hanging in the trees. I reached Seven Paths just at the moment when a nun in full black garment bowed to the wayside cross. It was beautiful and also a bit spooky. From my perspective it looked like the nun was bowing to the tree. It reminded me of the religious practices I’ve seen in South East Asia where small altars and offerings are scattered all over the place (not just religious sites) and have a distinct animistic feeling to it.

On 07.07. and 08.07.2021 a Shamanic Mall Retreat will take place with Karin Ferrari, Lona Gaikis, Bernhard Garnicnig and Peter Moosgaard. Further information concerning registration and participation can be found at www.koer-tirol.at.

“I came to New York City to research pseudo-sacred commercial architecture in the United States for six months. These often anonymous and ignored structures can be found all over the world. Yet they are particularly ubiquitous in the United States, where many casinos, banks, hotels, shopping centers, wellness and entertainment facilities imitate and reference mythical and sacral building elements.

Spring 2020 turned out to be a rather special time for this research trip. The beauty of spring in New York City was both fascinating and terrifying. When the metropolis emptied during the Covid-19 lockdown, it felt like I could really see the city for the first time. This is when I noticed a very special architectural phenomenon in Manhattan. Infrastructures, such as elevator shafts and water tanks, or multi-level penthouse units, which actually look a lot like places of worship, tower up on many New York City skyscrapers. I like to call them the Rooftop Temples of New York City.”

What will printed artwork look like in 2079? Will it still exist or will the digital world have permanently repressed tactile media? For the exhibition Cmd P for 2079, AGA LAB and curator Sofie Dederen selected four international artists who are researching print and speculating on the future of the medium during the artists-in-residence program. Who will determine what and how we transfer, and how does the volatility of digital media affect future generations and their power structures?

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of AGA LAB, Cmd P for 2079 is a co-production of AGA LAB and Frans Masereel Centrum (Belgium), in close collaboration with the Allard Pierson and with financial support from the Mondriaan Fonds, Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie NL, Pictoright Fonds and Prince Bernhard Cultuurfonds. The Bad Dreams Catcher is a protection device. A firewall for the realm of dreams, hopes and desires. Bad Dreams (Taylor Swift, LWYMMD) or Fake Dreams (also dreams faux) are dreams that are bad for you. Fake dreams aren’t nightmares, that torment you at night. They haunt you during the day! They appear to be inspirational or motivational of some kind and promise a wonderful life but the truth is they are little more than a beautiful lie. They might seem to be a great thing but believe me: they’re not. Bad dreams are a sort of psycho- emotional malware programmed into 3D human collective (sub)conscious by the forces in power in order to maintain status quo.

Hysterical Mining
Artist Presentation: Karin Ferrari

For the “Hysterical Mining Artists’ Presentations” the discursive space at Kunsthalle Wien Karlsplatz will act as a platform to make visible practices that combine interests in feminism and technology. A number of invited artists, as well as some of the artists participating in the exhibition “Hysterical Mining”, will present their work, research, ideas and inspirations.

Karin Ferrari uses media from pop and everyday culture to investigate the present. Her artistic research focuses on speculative narratives at the threshold of academic theory, paranoid political imagination and esoteric utopia desires. Her artistic work is often inspired by an Internet subculture that tries to understand “what’s really going on”. For the past two years Karin Ferrari has been travelling on research trips and residencies in the USA, Europe and South East Asia.

Conspiracy theories and esoteric utopias are very present today. In her art, Karin Ferrari is a witty observer of such issues. In her mystery documentaries she interweaves fact and fiction, speculation and academic theory into a captivating artistic analysis of the zeitgeist. The iPhone Xs as more than simply a modern mobile phone; as a code that Karin Ferrari sets out to interpret. In a superb re-assemblage of the ad made by Apple, the film develops an impressive density of semiotic linkages, while at the same time, repeatedly succumbs to the paranoid sign mania. What value is placed on freedom in today’s society? Works by more than fifty artists shed light on the psychological, cultural, religious, political and legal aspects of this complex issue. With its overlapping themes and cross-references, the exhibition weaves a tapestry of interdependencies and reciprocal influences between the individual and society, democracy and the economy, work and leisure, body and mind, nature and culture. Freedom is always relative to other factors and so has to be constantly renegotiated. It is evident that, as a result, the autonomy of the individual is invariably bound up with social responsibility.

Interview on Artslant, by Christian Petersen

Karin Ferrari was one of my favorite discoveries from the latest edition of The Wrong digital art biennale. The fact that her work stood out from that other 1621 new media artists that contributed to the world’s largest annual celecratoin of digital art proved that what whe creates is truly unique. Ferrari perfectly emulates the conspiracy theory videos that have become a ubiquitous part of YouTube culture. She so accurately captures the mood and aesthetic of these videos that the line between artistic creation and genuine belief becomes completely blurred.

You described yourself and life as “Aliens, Sex and Paranoia”. Can you explain these choices further?
Being alive is about exploring the unknown. Meeting otherness. Sometimes it scares you, sometimes you want to fuck it.

Is Paranoia a reasonable, logical reaction to the modern world?
Yes. Paranoid imagination is a natural backlash against paranoid politics, they are part of the same coin. For me as an artist, paranoia is interesting because it shows how powerful the creative mind is, bending the world towards your belies. We do that all the time without even realising. Its always the same principle in magic, meme magic, advertsisng, and quantum physics: attention creates reality.

Karin Ferrari’s art is inspired by Internet subcultures that try to understand ‚whats really going on’. Her video series DECODING THE WHOLE TRUTH reveals hidden messages in pop music videos. Katy Perry’s music video Dark Horse for example is the encoded depiction of the archaic ritual magic an occult elite uses to secure its power. Well, it looks like there are hidden messages in the opening graphics of US American News Broadcasts too. You decide.

Karin Ferrari is the main winner of the RLB Art Prize 2018. The awards of recognition went to the artists Anja Manfredi and Annelies Senfter.

‘In her video works, Karin Ferrari approaches the ubiquitous changes in the handling and perception of information or disinformation on the internet. Conspiracy theories, fake news, modern myths, so-called ‘urban legends’, pseudoscientific theories and esoteric utopias are experiencing a boom thanks to the internet and are setting the scene for current debates. Witty and ironically, the artist picks up these contents. Magic Circle investigates current feminist interest in the figure of the witch within contemporary artistic production. The exhibition aims to enter into a dialogue with the activist-motivated reception of the witch in the 1970s in order to demonstrate that this current interest is definitely not ahistorical. However, the project focuses on the contemporary relevance of the topic by incorporating technological history, pop culture, knowledge structures, and social mechanisms of exclusion.

BROOKLYN, NY – Tiger Strikes Asteroid New York is pleased to present Revealing Reflected Refractions, an exhibition featuring work by Andy An, Karin Ferrari, Hai-Hsin Huang, Alison Kudlow and Nooshin Rostami; curated by Jonathan Cowan and Rachael Gorchov. At turns playful, conspiratorial, empathic, humorous, political, and sensorial, the works in this exhibition serve as prisms that refract unseen truths, illuminating the familiar in unexpected ways. Andy An invites others to taste and smell the sensory memories of others through eating-based video games, Karin Ferrari reveals subtexts and biases in pop culture and news media by analyzing videos through the lens of conspiracy theories, Hai-Hsin Huang holds a metaphorical mirror to citizens of various cultures and sub-cultures, Alison Kudlow translates the formal and intangible qualities of reflected and refracted light into sculptural forms, and Nooshin Rostami activates air as a physical form by positioning bodies and fans in a space.
“Karin Ferrari’s video unmasks subliminal messages and manipulations in the media by analyzing the opening graphics of Zeit im Bild, Austria’s national news show. By using fringe belief systems ranging from mind control, space colonization, the Illuminati and alchemy to deconstruct the seemingly innocuous, Ferrari asks us to question who is informing our worldview, and to what end. Alternating between deadpan and tongue-in-cheek, she shows us that much of what we believe is shaped by our own biases.”

The event series GONDOLAT PLASZTIKA (Thought Sculpture) presents lecture-performances by the young artists Serafin Alvarez (SP), Karin Ferrari (AT), Szimán György (HU), who will guide through virtual spaces of video games, through music videos and endless corridors from sci-fi movies, until some hidden depths of the YouTube. Curated by Bori Szalai. Supported by Austrian Cultural Forum

Recently a Simpson’s episode from the year 2000 made headlines because it predicted Donald Trump’s election as US President. A simple coincidence or a case of predictive programming? Predictive programming is a controversial hypothesis about mind control in media: storylines or subtle images in movies and television shows are used to subconsciously familiarize the public with planned major events and substantial social changes. As a matter of fact, preemptive mass manipulation is already hidden in our everyday digital life in the form of algorithmic personalized search results (filter bubbles). Is predictive programming real? Is classified information leaked into sci-fi movies and music videos? Or do we manifest the images implanted into our collective consciousness?

V Moscow International Biennale for Young Art  (curated by Nadim Samman) presents the short film DECODING Katy Perry’s Dark Horse (THE WHOLE TRUTH) by Karin Ferrari, which reveals hidden messages in the music video Dark Horse by Katy Perry.  Experimental docu-ficition, en, 20 min, 2016
The rhetorical form of DECODING Katy Perry’s Dark Horse (THE WHOLE TRUTH) by Karin Ferrari, is clearly inspired by a rich vein of independent documentaries on YouTube which purport to uncover or correctly analyze the symbolic manifestations of major conspiracies in our public life. Set in Memphis – Egypt – and suffused with hieroglyphic imagery, an ultra light pop-music video by the eponymous American star receives a dogged, and deadpan, analysis in a voiceover supplied by the artist. Like the underground media whose idioms it highlights, Ferrari’s argument is by turns weirdly convincing and highly implausible.

The visual encodings marking the digital interface might be possessed with a subversive symbolic potential. The symbolic dimension of the digital interface desires to be recognized and examined, which will also unleash its magical transformative power. Is the wireless icon the antidotal counterpart to the all-seeing eye? Or are we simply already entangled in the ever present surplus of symbolic meaning?  In Hyperconnected (The Whole Picture), Karin Ferrari introduces a speculative chart mapping the flux of meanings between a cluster of icons related to the web. By appropriating and re-envisioning mimetic signs and their syntactical relations, new technicoloured virtual possibilities emerge from the ominous undercurrents that flow through planetary telecommunication networks and archaic power structures. Next time you touch a WiFi symbol, a different kind of connection might be established.

The Papay Gyro Nights Art Festival curated by Ivanov + Chan presents the short film DECODING Katy Perry’s Dark Horse (THE WHOLE TRUTH) by Karin Ferrari, which reveals hidden messages in the music video Dark Horse by Katy Perry. According to Ferrari’s interpretation Perry’s music video is the encoded depiction of the archaic ritual magic an occult elite uses to ideologically secure its power. The idea for film is based on a type of video that has emerged on YouTube in the grey zone of fiction and facts and attempts to visually grasp the complex and opaque power structures of the present.

Ausstellungsdauer 24. April 2015 – 8. November 2015
Konzept und Gesamtleitung von Karl Berger und Anna Horner

THE CHIC BOUTIQUE CHICAGO
Art with Function

ADDS DONNA, 4223 West Lake Street, Chicago, IL
Opening: 2nd of June 2013, 1 to 5 pm

… takes up the Viennese tradition of applied arts and develops it further in accordance with the present day.Since this is neither handicraft nor design, the artwork remains its own consistent independent work. The project has set itself the task of demonstrating the impossibility of assigning the work of young artists to a genre and also the fact that the claim of an artistic work cannot be confined to the narrow frame of a picture on the wall.
This exhibition concept was developed in 2012 and has already been successfully executed twice in Vienna. Now it has become a traveling concept. Johanna Braun and Michael Niemetz, the two creators of “The Chic Boutique”, have selected unique Viennese artists for this presentation in Chicago.
Participating Artists:
Roman Achitz, Cornelis van Almsick, Puneh Ansari, Ovi Anton, Tizia Barci, Anna Barfuß, Johanna Braun, Emma Maud Corrall, Marco Dessi, Driendl*Architects, Anna Egarmina, David Eisl, Lionel Favre, Karin Ferrari, Paul Philipp Heinze, Denise Herz, Kathi Hofer, Elke Krystufek, Mahony, Sands Murray-Wassink, Michael Niemetz, Micha Payer + Martin Gabriel, Stefan Reiterer, David Roth, Fiona Rukschcio, Elisabeth von Samsonow, Michael Strasser, Annete Tesarek, Jenni Tischer, Magda Tothava, Christian Weissenberger, Niki Weitzer, Julia Zastava & Magdalena Zeller.
